Bubble Fun

Bubble Fun

WALT / Practising to Count On and Count Back

Today we had a visit from the Science in a Van Roadshow.
We learnt about mixtures, separation and reactions.  We also had some bubble fun.
We decided to see how many bubbles we could blow in ONE breath and then add them together and take them away - this way we could practise our addition and subtraction and basic facts.

Some of us had to blow a few times to make sure we got enough bubbles to count!

"It was easy to blow the bubbles but we didn't get very many.  We knew our basic facts and were able to answer the questions quickly.  We didn't even have to help each other because we could easily work it out."

WALT Make Connections

"I don't like reading.  I  don't like working on the independent cards because they are hard sometimes.  When I get stuck on a card I ask a teacher or I try to figure it out myself. Sometimes it is hard to make connections with the text."

WALT Write Adjectives

We have been learning to add  describing words to our stories
to make them more interesting.

Here is a quick describing activity that we did in class.
We got to choose what animal we wanted to write about.
We used TAGUL to make them into word clouds.

I think it is easy to write adjectives because it is easy to think of the words.
When I write my stories I will try hard to add describing words so that it is interesting for people to read.

Showcase Term 4 - Wearable Art

Wearable Art with a Pacific flavour!

Room 9 have spent the last 2 terms creating 2 pieces of Wearable Art.
The first piece was a t-shirt with a painted picture that reminded us of the Pacific.
The girls chose to sketch and paint a Pasifika flower.
The boys chose to draw a sea turtle.

Inside each of these drawings were patterns that we had explored and seen displayed in
Pasifika artworks.  We practised by sketching these into our art books.

The second artwork created by the girls were hula skirts.  We reused plastic bags and tied them together as we worked in pairs.  At first it was a little tricky but the more we did, the better we got at tying them together.  Like they say - practise makes perfect!

The second artwork displayed by the boys was a Lavalava or Pareu (sarong)
to compliment their t-shirts.

We had a lot of help from Mrs Kong to complete the sarongs, painting of the t-shirts and in the construction of our hula skirts in time for the art show so a BIG THANK YOU to her for all her help!  We couldn't have done it without you.

We hope you enjoy our wonderful creations ... Tamure tamure, e te muremure ra...

Showcase - Wheels Day

On Wednesday 22nd of August, the Year 2 children participated in Wheels Day. We were showcasing another way we could get to school in conjunction with our school Travelwise programme.

Maths - WALT identify 2D and 3D shapes

WAL about Geometry.
We have learnt that "Geometry" means shapes.
We already knew a lot about 2D shapes so spent most of our time learning about 3D shapes.  We went on a shape treasure hunt around the school and took photo's of lots of different 3D shapes.  Some were easy to find and others were hard but it was lots of fun!  We made shape monsters using some of the shapes we had learnt about.

Daniel's Reflection:

"I liked learning about 3D shapes.  I liked the shape hunt but it was tricky trying to get in first place as we raced around the school looking for shapes - and - we weren't allowed to run!  It was easy finding the cylinders because there are lots of them - like the drinking fountains."

WALT Choose Words to Make Our Writing More Interesting

The Moon is like a rock because it is rocky.
The Sun is like a fireball because it is like a ball and like fire too.
Daniel
Writing Reflection
I like to write about similes.
I am so proud when I write good stories.

The next step for me is to practise using different similes.

WALT Identify the Characters and the Setting in the story

"I don't like reading because there are lots of words in the books.  I read to my mum and dad and they help me with my reading.  When I get stuck on tricky words I try to sound it out.  I go on Reading Eggs Express because I like to verse people."
